Eagle/ACE Participants Make a Field Trip To San Antonio

October 20, 2015 - This past Saturday (October 17th), 19 students from our Eagle/ACE Saturday class made a "field trip" down to San Antonio for a unique golf experience that they won't soon forget. The group - accompanied by parents and TFTGA Executive Director, Jennifer MacCurrach - ventured 45 minutes south of Austin to TPC San Antonio where they attended the Dennis Walters Golf Show and the San Antonio Championship (a Champions Tour event).

First, our students joined participants from The First Tee of San Antonio on the driving range where they met Dennis Walter and his canine co-host - Bucky. The Dennis Walters Golf Show is a one hour combination of "Golf Lessons and Life Lessons". Dennis is one of only eleven honorary lifetime members of The PGA of America. He has appeared at dozens of PGA Tour, Champions Tour, LPGA and Nationwide events and a numerous other functions as a motivational speaker and trick shot artist. Dennis' dream was always to play on the PGA Tour. In 1974, he had an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Dennis found there were a lot of things he couldn't do, but there was no way he was giving up playing golf - thus, with this never say die attitude, a new career was born.

Next the crew headed from the range to the course to watch senior tour professional golfers at the San Antonio Championship. Specifically, they cheered on fellow Austinites Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite and Wes Short Jr. during the second round of play.  Short Jr. was in contention entering Saturday so the group had a blast watching him in particular.

All three golfers have a history of contribution to and support of our Austin chapter of The First Tee. Short Jr. recently teamed up with TFTGA ACE Level participant - Ben Constancio - at the 2015 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach in late September. The pro-junior duo lead the field with one hole to go prior to finishing T-3. In 2014, Tom Kite paired up with another representative from the Austin chapter - Roberto Arguello - in the same event. Roberto, now a freshman at Stanford, considered the opportunity " the experience of a lifetime." Last but not least, Ben Crenshaw has served as a host for a variety of TFTGA fundraisers including the 2014 and 2015 Dell ATX Shootout and More Than A Game Experience. His wife - Julie - also serves on The First Tee of Greater Austin board.
